Why I’m Done With Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones, the HBO hit series, is awesome. Don’t get me wrong. It’s based on the Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novel series by George R. R. Martin. I read the first four novels before the TV series even started and I really appreciate Martin’s style. Yet, Martin has a problem: ending the madness.

First, let’s applaud Martin’s ability to engage readers and audiences. His approach is absolutely unique. He makes you fall in love with heroic characters and then systematically destroys their lives. Then, Martin allows his villains to evolve to the point that the reader (audience) begins to feel genuine empathy for them. Jaime Lannister for example, started as the primary villain but evolves over the course of the series to become a (dare I say) human being. This is an outright rebellion against literary conventions, and the source of George R. R. Martin’s creative genius.

Now, let’s get to the problem. Where does it all end? I told myself that I wouldn’t read or watch past the 3rd installment of the story because all the likable characters were dead. Recently, HBO audiences experienced the death of Jon Snow, the last true hero of the series. Yet, does the story end? No, the books go on and the TV series will go on. Admittedly, it’s hard to end a series, but everything must conclude at some point. Martin has dug himself into a hole by dragging his story through yet another book and yet another season of the show. An ending is important for readers (audiences). The end gives us a moment to breathe and absorb the message of the story. Without an ending, the reader is trapped in the madness. To the fans of George R. R. Martin, I’ll quote Tyrion Lannister – “Your loyalty to your captors is touching.”

  1. An ending is not necessary. One of the general problems with fiction is that a reader spends so much effort to identify with the characters that, while the ending may be a happy one (or at least concluded), there is also an emptiness left. Most readers and followers of TV series will find they would like one more episode or one more chapter. This is why books and movies have sequels and why there are often calls for popular TV series to become movies. The desire for an X-Files movie or a 24 movie come to mind as examples. There is nothing wrong with a never-ending story as long as the imagination and creativity of the writers continues to flow. When it ends, the story should wrap. Nothing is worse than continuing to drag out a story after it has already been told.

  2. I guarantee you that Jon Snow will be back, and that his death is a fake out. If you want, I can explain why. E-mail me. Don’t give up – believe it or not, the story will have a reasonably happy ending. If for no other reason than that’s the last thing anyone will expect. Really – I would bet quite a bit on this.

    2. J HOPE YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT JON RETURNING, SINCE I READ THE FIRST 5 BOOKS, NOW I WONDER HOW SANSA STARK IS GOING TO FARE, BECAUSE I WAS QUITE SURPRISED TO SEE HER WITH RAMSEY BOLTON, I CAN MAKE NO FURTHER COMMENT ON THAT BECAUSE IT WAS SO DIFFERENT FROM THE BOOK, HOWEVER I CANT WAIT TO SEE THE NEXT SEASON.

  3. I agree with your reasoning. HBO just announced that the show will go through season 8, instead of the previously-stated 7 seasons. I for one was actually looking forward to this show being over after two more seasons because I too am frankly getting tired of WAITING for the END. A zombie/dragon war is obviously where this is headed, who ultimately takes the iron throne, etc, etc. Let’s get on with it! And while we’re busy waiting and waiting, everyone we love keeps getting killed! It’s like we’re Carrie and the show is Mr. Big, at some point it’s like marry me so we can have our ending, or move on.
